FANATICS ABOUT PURITY

WATER SOFTENER OPERATION HOW IT WORKS

Just as the name implies, the water softener operation aims to make hard water easier to get along with. Water plays a vital role in our lives, as we need it to survive and to complete our day to day activities. However, some of us tend to forget how important it is to drink soft, pure water that protects our body instead of harming it.

It has happened to all of us to wash dishes and then find dry spots on them, or to have the plumbing system clogged by hard water. Besides, hard water can also affect kitchen appliances along with your washing machine – not to mention that detergents lose their effectiveness in hard water! This is where the water softener steps in and aims to purify water, make it taste better and be more effective.

water softenerThe mechanism behind the water softener operation is a very simple one: the device aims to remove calcium and magnesium. Basically, the softener is nothing but a device mounted into your house’s water supply system, and the process is the same regardless of the type of softener you use – calcium and magnesium are usually replaced by sodium (the process is also referred to as “ion exchange”).

This is how it works: hard water passes through the mineral tank of the softener (filled with resin), and the calcium and magnesium present in hard water simply replace the sodium beads located in the mineral tank.

This is basically an exchange of minerals: calcium and magnesium stay in the mineral tank, while sodium is released into the water. After the process is complete, the mineral tank will be cleared of excess brine and the water softener is ready to filter hard water again. The process can go on and on and water softeners usually require little to no attention, as they have an automatic regenerating system.
